“Manager was overwrought”

  , Saratoga Springs
Two rooms, one for two nights, one for one night. I checked in Friday evening. Inquired about the second reserved room for Saturday, but manager could not find it in the system. I found my "King Suite", the largest room available, was aging (like the rest of the hotel) but in general OK. Later I found that an outlet, a light, and the phone were all non-functional, and the ancient GFCI in the bathroom would not trip with the TEST button, a code violation. Since the property dates back to when outlets and lights were perhaps considered expensive extras, (one per wall if you're lucky) this was a bit of an inconvenience. But the real problem started with an insistent knocking at 11:15AM on Sunday, checkout day. The manager (Harry Rang), was at the door, and in a very load and agitated voice, said: "ARE YOU CHECKING OUT OR ARE YOU STAYING ANOTHER DAY!?" I replied that I was getting a late start to the day and I might be another hour. He said "THERE IS A $10 CHARGE FOR LATE CHECKOUT!" And I replied "OK, whatever..." and went back to packing prior to taking a shower. I'd never experienced a late checkout as a crisis or emergency, but that's how Mr. Rang came across. At checkout, I found that the bill for each of the rooms included a daily charge for the safe in the room (on top of the advertised room rate). I told Mr Rang I wasn't aware of this and hadn't requested (or used) the safes. He stated "If you read the website very carefully it is mentioned there". I asked him to not charge me the safe rental and he refused, stating that he's not allowed to do that. Hmmm, a hotel manager not allowed to adjust a bill? Sure, I believe you! Anyway, to sum up: the hotel is old but generally sound. The manager stated that he's been working 17 hour shifts since 4 days prior. But moreover, he completely misses the concept of "hospitality". This "guest" was made to feel like an unwanted nuisance.Although I have an upcoming large business project in the area, I won't be returning, and have instructed my company staff not to consider booking here.In this market there are myriad options available (try La Quinta nearby - fabulous).
