“When I checked in at 4:10PM I was told by the desk clerk...”

When I checked in at 4:10PM I was told by the desk clerk, Joey, that my room with a king bed was not ready because it had not been cleaned. I reminded him that check-in time was 2:00PM and he replied they were short on cleaning staff. He asked a member of the cleaning staff if any king rooms were available but the lady just walked away. She returned a minute later and just said no. The clerk didn't ask how long it would be or anything, he just offered me a queen room instead. We were in a hurry to change for a funeral so reluctantly agreed. At this time, the manager, Glenda, walked in and as we were filling out the registration forms, started berating the clerk for giving away a queen room that apparently was reserved for someone else. My opinion of the staff, at this time, was very poor not just the clerk but the manager's lack of professionalism in front of a customer. While I was standing there filling out the vehicle information, another lady customer came to the desk and asked Joey if they had an iron and board available which he replied "No the customers don't tend to return them." The manager, still looking at the computer said in a very terse tone "look in the cupboard behind me." The clerk found the iron and gave it to the lady but no "I'm sorry" or anything. Standard rule of ettiquette is professionalism at all times and if you do need to correct someone on your staff, you do it in private, not in front of the patrons. we did wind up getting a king room but when we got there the cleaning staff we still in it. We were told that all the towels were not there (short one I think) which we weren't concerned about but we immediately noticed the bedside light was burned out and the bathroom floor felt sticky. A washcloth and partially used bottle of shampoo were still in the shower. After the reception from the clerk and manager we did not report these concerns as we felt they would not probably be received with much interest. We have been staying at Super 8's for many years and have generally found them to be clean, comfortable and we have been genuinely welcomed, not this time. Bottom line, we will never stay at this particular Super 8 again and will give considerable thought as to Super 8's overall!
