“Tolerable...”

For the price, I didn't expect the Ritz, and in that regard, my expectations were certainly met. We just needed a (relatively) cheap place to stay (well, cheap by Boston standards, anyway). The motel was okay...the rooms were old and worn down, and not the cleanest. The crucial things...sheets, pillows, towels...were okay, but there was plenty of grime to go around on the doors, floors, light switches, etc.. Our first room had an ant problem. I asked the manager nicely to please spray while we were gone or at least put out ant traps. Upon return later that evening, the ants either defied the spray, or their lives were otherwise spared because they were still doing the Samba on the bathroom floor. After complaining and getting a little bit of guff from the desk manager, we were given a different room (we were told that the motel allows homeless families to stay for extended periods, which accounted for the apparent shortage of rooms). Our "new room" was much bigger, but not much cleaner. The TV didn't work, someone had used the toilet roll holder as an ashtray, the bathroom door knob was hanging by a thread (literally) and the pillow-top mattress had been flipped to the non-pillow top side (which made me wonder what horrors had befallen the pillow top to require such drastic measures). But at least there were no ants. On a good note, the free breakfast was actually very good...the waffles were fantastic, the orange juice was cold, and the coffee was hot. The only odd part was that we were not allowed to take breakfast food back to our room...perhaps they were worried about ants...
