“Handicap Unfriendly”

  , Wellington
We stayed at this Super 8 over the Father's Day weekend so we could attend the big car show. The location was convenient. However, my husband is in a wheelchair and this place is not wheelchair friendly. One grab bar in the bathrub does not make a room handicap accessible. The bathroom was the exact same size and layout of the other bathrooms in the hotel. The door was a little wider but once in the bathroom, you could not shut the door for privacy. As my husband tried to transfer from the toilet seat to the shower chair in the bathtub, his foot got stuck in the small space between toilet and shower. If I had not been there to help him, he would have been stuck forever because in this bathroom there is NO method for calling to the front desk (via phone or pull cord). Since this room had the exact same size bathroom, why the hell would you put this room at the opposite end of the hall as the stairs/chair lift??? It was hard for him to roll over the plush hallway carpet. And in case of fire, the lift does not work. So who's going to help him up the 6-8 stairs to the mail floor??? Of course, in a smoke filled hallway, he probably wouldn't make it to the other end. This is a totally unsafe place to stay if you are a para or quad in a wheelchair. When I went up on Saturday morning to get breakfast, there wasn't anything left except waffles. On Sunday we got both went to breakfast and while there was a selection, there was NO place to sit. There were 2 normal hight tables and 3 bar hight tables. So we ate in the lobby by the TV at a coffee table. The staff working there was nice and the hotel clerk had to open the lift for us each time we came and went. I understand why for safety reasons but what a pain. We plan to attend the car show next year but we will NOT be staying at this Super 8. Oh the swimming pool was NOT working. There were a ton of kids staying at this hotel and no pool. But this still had a great time running up and down the halls screaming and laughing.
