“Price was right!”

  , Clancy
On my recent trip to Santa Fe, I stayed at 3 different hotels, each moving further away from the Plaza, down Cerillos Rd. The prices went down as I moved out -- the Super 8 was less than half the cost of the first hotel. BUT the first one had lovely gardens and a shady play area for children, a covered swimming pool with hot tub (with no one in them when I was there -- really enjoyed this amenity!). The second place (a Choice hotel group place) had a pool (outdoor) and my room had a small balcony with table and 2 chairs overlooking the courtyard and pool. The Super 8 was more basic. Because breakfast restaurants are so wonderful in Santa Fe, I quit eating the hotel breakfasts when I got to the Super 8 and found that I couldn't get an orange (generally the cheap orange juice at hotel breakfasts is not to my liking). Went to Tecolote Cafe, and Sage Bakery the next morning, instead. One thing I missed at the Super 8 was a small fridge in the room. I had fruit I wanted to keep cold, and that worked the first 2 nights at other hotels. I wanted to be able to open the window (I don't like air conditioning) and, in the first room I had, neither I nor the maid could get the window to budge. I moved down the hallway and it worked fine. (However that room had a lamp I could not figure out how to turn on, but didn't ask.) The desk clerk was the same person every time I came in and out and she was wonderful -- friendly, attentive, eager to solve problems, look up info on her computer (about the time of Feast of the Assumption services at the Cathedral), interested in what I was doing. There is not really an "office" -- just a computer in the corner of the (small) lobby, but internet access was fast and reliable (and free) in my room. Rooms are not tiny -- large enough for a very comfortable chair with an ottoman, desk, nice chest of drawers with a big flatscreen TV on top. The bed, pillows and coverlet were very nice (not "cheap" looking or sleazy). This was a good basic place to stay and I would do it again, forgoing a big fancy lobby and gardens, to spend my money on a nice meal and the opera.
