“Stay somewhere else”

  , Bedford
We stayed at this hotel for two shopping stops in Freeport, on either end of a ski trip. It's very close to all the stores and restaurants, but that's about the only good thing going for this hotel. The first two nights, we stayed in a room that I'm pretty sure has air quality issues. The room just 'stank'. Mildewy, or moldy. The shower curtain rod was falling off, the tub drain leaked, and the toilet didn't flush properly. The last night, we stayed in a room that didn't smell quite as bad. It felt cleaner, but then when my partner was grabbing a towel for a shower, there was a hair on it that was short, dark, and curly. If you know what I mean. The hallway behind the lobby is where the smoking rooms are, so if you're not a smoker, be prepared to hold your breath while you're walking to or from the lobby, or to get breakfast. The breakfast is free, which is ok. The waffles are not good, but you can have cereal, yogurt and fruit. To add insult to injury, there was an envelope in the room suggesting that if I was happy with the room, I could 'leave something for the housekeeper'. Maybe it's just me, but even if the room WAS completely clean, maybe the hotel chain should just pay their cleaning staff more. To me, it felt a little bit like blackmail - if I don't leave something (which I didn't) the cleaner won't do a good job. I've stayed in hotels much nicer than this one, and I've never seen an envelope asking me to tip the cleaner. This is a very cheap hotel, so I understand that you get what you pay for. But the Econolodge (which is just across the street) is much, much cleaner for about the same price.
