“HS students shouldn't be desk clerks”

I love Super 8, but this particular stay was odd. The young man at the desk was wearing a cap, t-shirt and jeans (not the usual Super 8 standards). I asked for a room to sleep after a long day of caring for my mother at a funeral then driving 8 hours of my 24 hour drive. He asked, "How many?" to which I responded, "Just one room, I'm alone." He did some computing, asked about smoking or non, I chose non - not that it mattered, the whole place wreaks of old smoke odor (again, not a standard of Super 8). Then, while computing, he asks, "How many kids?" I reiterate, "None, I'm alone." He asks, "How many pets?" "None, I'm alone." "Friends?" "I'm alone." in my best irritated voice. He then gives me the room number, points up the stairs and says, "It's right up there." I ask about parking to which he says, "In the parking lot, but come in this door so I can know you're alone." I wonder what about my Lincoln, my designer clothes, my expensive glasses and my cash payment made it look like I am a swindler, but I was irritated. Had I not had a headache and been in need of a bed, I'd have made a fuss and left. I know it's a rural Super 8 next to a couple truck stops but there is a standard of service that should apply to all hotels, regardless of locale. I had the privilege to pay $75 for this attitude and to boot, the sheets were clean but dingy and the morning fruit options warm, had brown spots and was soft (not crisp). Overall a dismal experience but on the upside, it's a route I never take so probably won't have to choose next time I'm in town. I'll still stay at Super 8's because I am usually treated quite well for a no frills sleep.
